While solar power was once reserved for astronauts and top-secret military applications, it now has a place in your yard. Initially something of a novelty, solar powered garden lighting is now sold at almost every home improvement outlet online and offline.
Thus, if you are looking to provide additional lighting for your home landscaping layout, you may want to take a more serious look at solar powered lights.
These solar lawn lights don't look anything like the solar powered signs scattered along the nation's highways and byways. These have no tall panel supporting the light display. Instead, the solar power collection system is built right into the light itself, making the power collection system unobtrusive.
This modest energy collection system allows for a lot of experimentation in design for outdoor solar light systems. You can find almost any design that you like. This includes short stake lights, spotlights, wall mounted lights, and hanging lantern styles.
Most lights provide illumination using LED light bulb systems. A solar LED garden illumination scheme will therefore provide more white light on your landscaping than traditional garden lighting formats that used old-fashioned bulbs. You may want to adjust the coloring of your plantings accordingly to maximize the effect of the light.
However, other than a color difference based on the kind of light spectrum being created, an outdoor solar light is really quite similar to your regular lighting. It can illuminate walkways, ponds, and gazebos. It can even be used to provide spotlighting for flags being flown at night.
A major advantage over traditional lighting is that solar lawn lights do not require you to tear up your yard to install their support wiring. There is no support wiring or support power station to worry about with these lights. You simply identify where you would like the light to go and put in there. Most are staked into the ground, but there will be some that have stands or wall mounts, depending on the size and shape of the design.
You will also not have to worry about leaving them on all night and facing a horrendous power bill at the end of the month. Solar powered garden lighting requires an initial investment, but after that you don't have to pay anything. You can enjoy the light for as long as it lasts, and most lights have a warranty promising specific lifetimes.
You also do not have to worry about your outdoor solar light system leaving you in the dark. Knowing that the outdoors does not always provide consistent sunlight, the designers of solar LED garden lights included batteries in most systems that are powered up by the sun during the day. At night, if the regular power runs out, the backup solar battery provides power until the morning.
With all of this flexibility and potential cost savings, solar lawn lights are quite the landscaping solution. If you haven't considered them before, now is the time. Most are priced to be competitive with traditional lighting programs, and additional savings on power make them a great buy.
